As part of World Biodiversity Day on 22 May, our university hosted a panel discussion and exhibition on the 'wise use and sustainability of biodiversity'.
In accordance with the tradition established each year on 22 May, the date designated as World Biodiversity Day, the academic staff of the Forestry and Design Department of our University convened a panel with the objective of fostering awareness and attention to the subject of biodiversity among the younger generation.
Prior to the panel discussion, Iğdır High School Painting Teacher Göksu Can Yılmaz presented a collection of his paintings, showcasing the avian biodiversity of Iğdır..
In the panel, retired Nature Conservation and National Parks Iğdır Branch Manager Mete Türkoğlu, Department of Forestry Hunting and Wildlife Programme academicians Dr. Belkıs Muca Yiğit and Dr. Emrah Çelik, Lecturer from the Department of Design. Gör. Turgay Karataş made their speeches.
Mete Türkoğlu presented examples from past studies on the concept and importance of biodiversity and the protection of ecosystem order. Türkoğlu also emphasised that the species used in culture environments should be selected in accordance with the biodiversity of our country..
Assit. Dr. Emrah Çelik gave information about the importance of fauna components in biodiversity in our country and in the world. i.
Çelik also mentioned in which direction the studies on the living groups constituting the fauna have been concentrated in recent years. He presented specific examples from these studies.
Assit. Prof. Dr. Belkıs Muca Yiğit emphasised the economic value of plant biodiversity in the world and in our country. She also touched upon the issues related to the protection and use of biodiversity.
The last speaker of the panel was Lect. Dr. Turgay Karataş gave information about the design world where biodiversity is modelled. Referring to the field of ‘Biomimicry’ in particular, Karataş talked about the services offered by this field to mankind.
Nature Conservation and National Parks Iğdır Branch Directorate officials and Haydar Aliyev Science High School students participated in the panel. Science high school students were accompanied by biology teacher Zehra Tali and history teacher Duygu Sevilmiş.
The panel ended with the presentation of certificates of appreciation and wishes for success.
